GERIATRIC EDUCATION CENTERS (GECs)
The Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers
(CNYGECs), housed at the Division of Nursing at New York
University, is an affliate of the Hartford Institute for
Geriatric Nursing.
Summary of the Consortium of New York Geriatric Education
Centers (CNYGECs): To meet the health needs of a growing
national geriatric population, the Federal Health Resources and
Services Administration (HRSA), Bureau of Health Professions,
funds a national network of interdisciplinary Geriatric
Education Centers (GECs).
Joining that network is the Consortium of New York Geriatric
Education Centers (CNYGECs); which represents the partnership of
the Columbia University-New York GEC and the Hunter/Mt. Sinai
GEC. This consortium brings together the combined resources of
Columbia University, New York University, Maimonides Medical
Center, Mt. Sinai/NYU Medical Center, the Brookdale Center on
Aging of Hunter College, New York College of Podiatric Medicine,
and SUNY College of Optometry. It draws on the outstanding
resources of five major teaching institutions, over 75 faculty,
hundreds of clinical affiliates, and four major libraries.
The mission of the CNYGECs is to improve and expand geriatric
health care particularly for minority, multi-ethnic, low-income,
and under served elderly throughout the state of New York, by
providing interdisciplinary, cutting-edge knowledge and training
concerning issues, treatments, and service delivery models to a
broad range of health care professionals and academic faculty
leadership who will train others.
