MATHY MEZEY,
EdD, RN, FAAN Director
Dr. Mathy Mezey, EdD, RN, FAAN has been named to the Independence
Foundation Professorship of Nursing Education in the New York
University
Division of Nursing.
Holding the Independence Foundation Chair in Nursing, Dr.
Mezey's distinguished career has focused on raising the
standards of nurses caring for older adults and ensuring that
people age in comfort and with dignity. Dr. Mezey received her
undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing from Columbia
University. In New York City, she worked for The Visiting Nurse
Service of New York and taught at Lehman College, CUNY. From
1981 to 1991, Dr. Mezey was a Professor at the University of
Pennsylvania where she directed the geriatric nurse practitioner
program and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Teaching Nursing
Home Program.
Since 1996, Dr. Mezey has directed the John A. Hartford
Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing in the NYU Division
of Nursing. Funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation, the
Hartford Institute is the only nurse-led Institute in the
country seeking to shape the quality of the nation's health care
for older Americans by promoting geriatric nursing excellence to
the larger health care community and the nursing profession.
With support from other foundations and in collaboration with
national organizations, the Hartford Institute accomplishes its
mission through work in four areas: education, practice,
research and policy and consumer education.
Dr. Mezey has a long standing interest in bioethics research and
education, Her research in bioethics focuses on the care of
frail older adults at the end of life. With Nancy Dubler, she
directs the Montefiore Medical Center / NYU Division of Nursing
Certificate Program in Bioethics and the Medical Humanities.
