FAGIN, PhD, RN, FAAN

Claire Fagin has had extensive and progressive experience in
nursing, health care, and educational administration which
includes teaching, practice, consultation, and participation in
health policy, in both public and private sectors. Dr. Fagin, a
consultant in organizational development and leadership, is
Professor Emerita and Dean Emerita of the University of
Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She served as the interim
president of the University of Pennsylvania from 1993-1994.
Currently she a consultant to The John A. Hartford Foundation,
Inc. and directs their program: Building Academic Geriatric
Nursing Capacity.
She served on the boards of directors of the Radian Group Inc.
1994-2002, a financial services and secondary mortgage insurance
company listed on the New York Stock Exchange; Salomon Inc.,
1994-1997, and the Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company 1978-
1996 and chaired the Audit Committee. She now serves on the
boards of the New York Academy of Medicine, the Van Ameringen
Foundation, and the Visiting Nurse Service of NY. She is a
member of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of
Science; the expert panel on nursing of the World Health
Organization; the American Academy of Nursing and the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences.
She has received eleven honorary doctoral degrees as well as
numerous alumni, civic and professional awards. She has
published 11 books or monographs and over 90 articles in
professional journals. In recognition of her contribution to
nursing education and leadership and her influence on health
care policy, Dr. Fagin received the Honorary Recognition Award
of the American Nurses Association, the most prestigious honor
awarded in the nursing profession. She was also named a “living
legend” by the American Academy of Nursing, received the New
York University Presidential Medal in 1998, and, in 2002,
received the Nightingale Lamp Award from the American Nurses
Foundation. Dr. Fagin received her BS from Wagner College in
Massachusetts, MA from Teacher’s College, Columbia and her Ph.D.
from New York University.
